About my Early Travel Adventures

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in learning more about me, Liana the Savvy Travel Guru. I’ve been travelling since I was four years old. My parents are free-spirited people who take a pretty cavalier approach to life, enjoying adventure after adventure along the way. When I was very young, they were brave enough to trek across country from New York to Colorado on a road trip with two young kids. Next, they conquered traveling to Europe multiple times over many years with those same two young kids. During one three-week stint, we wandered throughout England, France, and Germany (with the same two young kids) without one pre-booked hotel reservation!

When my family hosted an exchange student from Netherlands for a full year, it really cemented my passion for meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. We’ve visited Erik on multiple occasions since that time.

All of my earliest adventures were with my family. We weren’t wealthy by any means. I promise, no amount of calculating could possibly explain how they pulled it off. But they did pull it off, and I am forever grateful for the many many cherished memories that I still continue to make with them today.

Becoming the Travel Savvy Guru

So obviously I learned a lot while traveling young. I learned even more as I’ve grown into my own travel pants, so to speak. I’ve always had a knack for language (at least the romantic ones). So when I found myself in the position of changing majors and universities, I was drawn to something I’ve always excelled in – language. The Spanish language, to be more exact. My focus on a culture major really helped me gain a more global perspective.

Now, you don’t become a travel savvy guru overnight. And you certainly don’t become one without jumping out of the nest on your own here and there. So, my adventure and growth continued when I decided to spend two semesters studying in Spain during college. You learn a lot in 8 months, especially with like-minded passionate young travelers like yourself to share in the revelry! From riding trains, buses, subways, to cheap airfare to visit other parts of Europe and going on day-trips from my home base in Madrid, I am really excited to share so many things from that time in my life.

After college, I focused a bit on getting my financial feet under me, so I was highly selective of the trips took for a while. In that time, I’ve taken trips to Belize, Key West, Arizona, Charlotte… the list is long, and mostly occurred in the United States, which is a magical variety of awesomeness in and of itself. There’s a lot to learn about American destinations and culture, and I’d like to share some of that too.

Where we are Headed Next…

Ultimately, I am back to being focused on traveling the world. My boyfriend and I have made it our mission. His newly-discovered interest in travel triggered us to spend some serious research hours on everything from travel clothes, backpacks, shoes, packing techniques, cheap airfare resources… I cannot even name it all. You see, Tom had never traveled to Europe before. I had never traveled to the Caribbean before (unless you count Belize because the vibe is very Caribbean). So we knew we wanted to see those regions of the world together. In the past year, we have gone to Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Charleston South Carolina, Newport Rhode Island, Iceland, and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Our travel schedule has been absolutely crazy! I love every second of it.

I learned a lot about travel alone. Together with Tom, we’ve learned a lot more! We want to share all we’ve learned with the world. Why? Because we know that Savvy Travelers = Happy Travelers. And who wouldn’t want to launch a blog business about something they love?! So thank you for learning more about me, Liana the Travel Savvy Guru. Please stop back often to visit and share. I look forward to hearing about your stories and travel tips too!
